Marine Plant Hire delivers new landing craft to Dartmouth with a Precision tow through Exeter Ship Canal

Marine Plant Hire has successfully completed the tow of a newly built landing craft from Exeter to Dartmouth, navigating the highly constrained Exeter Ship Canal with precision and control.
Appointed by Damen Shipyards, the operation presented a significant technical challenge. The vessel had been constructed to the maximum dimensions of the canal’s locks, leaving virtually no margin for error throughout the journey.
The route included narrow lock chambers, swing and lift bridges, and sections of restricted water depth, all of which limited manoeuvrability. In several areas, the vessel passed extremely close to the lock walls on both sides, requiring continuous accuracy and careful handling.
To deliver the operation, Marine Plant Hire deployed coastal tug Boojum Bay. Equipped with a 5-tonne bollard pull, single-screw propulsion and a Kort nozzle, the vessel provided the low-speed control needed to maintain steady progress through tight sections.
The team adopted a disciplined, step-by-step approach, underpinned by detailed planning and clear communication. The skipper used Boojum Bay’s manoeuvrability to maintain precise positioning, particularly during lock approaches. Crew members provided consistent guidance on distances and alignment, ensuring safe passage through each constraint, while real-time adjustments maintained full control throughout the tow.
The landing craft was delivered safely to Dartmouth, meeting programme requirements and maintaining full asset integrity. The operation also included the sea tow from Turf Lock to Dartmouth, requiring a seamless transition from inland to coastal conditions.
Reflecting on the project, Damen Shipyards commented:
“Damen would like to express its sincere appreciation to Marine Plant Hire for the professional support provided during the transport of YN 571844 LUV 2208.
“The operation included navigating the Exeter Canal, with its challenging narrow passages of locks and bridges, as well as the sea tow from Turf Lock to Dartmouth.
“Marine Plant Hire’s team demonstrated excellent seamanship, flexibility and problem-solving capabilities throughout the entire operation. The possibility to make use of their mooring facilities added even more efficiency to the project.
A reliable partner — with Marine Plant Hire, your vessel is truly in good hands.”
Palle Bonemeijer, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld
This project demonstrates Marine Plant Hire’s capability in complex inland marine logistics, combining specialist vessels with experienced crews to deliver controlled outcomes in highly constrained environments. It may also represent one of the final vessels to transit this historic route, adding further significance to a technically demanding operation.
