

Pushing Boundaries in Offshore Innovation with SeaThor
Introduction
Floating offshore wind represents the next frontier in renewable energy and with it comes the challenge of managing dynamic subsea cables in harsher environments. SeaThor’s CableSpring system aims to solve that and Marine Plant Hire was selected to support its real-world testing in Cornwall.
The Challenge
The trial needed to validate how CableSpring performs under real offshore conditions. Conducted at the FaBTest site, the operation involved multiple vessel types, specialist subsea work and strict environmental compliance. Precision, coordination and technical capability were essential for success.
The Solution
Marine Plant Hire delivered full marine and subsea support for the week-long trial including mobilisation, towing, deck work and diver-led deployment. We deployed three vessels: MPH36 (barge), Christine (tug), and Sea Seeker (dive support). Our crews managed winch deployment, cable curvature checks and system handling, all in line with offshore trial requirements.


How We Delivered
Working closely with SeaThor, TMS Diving Team and Exeter University, we planned and executed a safe and efficient test programme. We managed vessel coordination, subsea operations, deck logistics and compliance throughout. Each element was timed to tidal access and weather windows to keep the project on track.
The Outcome
CableSpring was successfully deployed and tested offshore, advancing its path to commercial use in floating wind. For Marine Plant Hire, the project showcased our versatility - from barge and dive support to cable operations - and reinforced our role in supporting next-gen clean energy.
